Oscars Betting: Spike Lee and Rachel Weisz worth backing at big prices

It’s no fun gambling on the favorites in the Oscars, so Max Liu makes the case for a trio of well priced bets for Tinsel Town’s big night this Sunday…
Best Picture – Roma place to romp to victory
This market looked aggressive when nominations were declared but, with two weeks ahead, Roma 1.58 is defined to be the very first foreign language film to win.
Mexican director and screenwriter Alfonso Cuaron reached deep in his youth, and his country’s political background, to craft this gorgeous movie. What’s more, Netflix have played a blinder during the Oscar campaign, emphasising the labour and technical nous that went into realising Cuaron’s vision and their situation should prove persuasive here as it did with all the Directors Guild of America, where it took the top prize.
According to the gambling, Green Book 4.20 is the closest rival to Roma, however it is tough to support when its manager, Peter Farrelly, did not receive a nod for Best Director. Only four movies have won Best Picture without a Best Director nomination.
The film with the best chance of causing an upset is, for my money, Black Panther 25.00. True, it doesn’t have a nomination in some of the other major classes – directing, writing, acting – but it might acquire support from the Academy’s enlarged, younger and more diverse membership.
